Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by neural inflammation and demyelination of the central nervous system. Nearly 1 million people live with MS in United States. Common symptoms include fatigue, visual disorders, imbalance, coordination, spasticity, cognitive and emotional disorders, speech disorders, bladder, intestine, and sexual related disorders leading to most persons with MS becoming disabled as the disease progresses. Despite known exercise benefits in persons with MS, it has been found persons with MS are most inactive compared to age matched patients with other chronic conditions. Part of this problem is related to lack of guidelines and conflicting understanding of exercise prescription and rehabilitation strategies in this population.

Different stages and types of MS will be discussed along with efficient tests and measures to track progress and outcomes. Easy to use evidence-based guidelines to exercise prescription will be laid out. Interprofessional communication and teamwork as they pertain to management of patients with MS will be highlighted.

Naseem Chatiwala, PT, DPT, MS, NCS is a board-certified neuro clinical specialist and a certified vestibular clinical specialist with over 25 years of experience as a physical therapist treating a variety of complex neuro diagnosis. Naseem is the owner of Rehab Health 360 LLC, a highly specialized clinic offering premium physical therapy services to clients with neurological deficits. Naseem has been instrumental in developing the vestibular task force at Spaulding Rehab Network and the neuro and concussion program at The Clough Family Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies (Emerson Hospital). She is an adjunct faculty in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at MGH Institute of Health Professions and University of Massachusetts-Lowell. She is a course developer and instructor for Summit Professional Education, where she instructs in-person and online webinars offering the continuing education courses to Physical and Occupational therapists on numerous neuro diagnosis.

Naseem is actively involved in American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and served as a co-chair of the American Physical Therapy Association of Massachusetts (APTA of MA) Neuro Special Interest Group from 2017-2019. She is currently a co-chair of the APTA Concussion Clinical Practice Guideline knowledge translation task force. Naseem has presented at various state and national conferences and has won awards for excellence in research for case study (poster presentations). She was awarded Emerson Rehab 2019-Excellence in Education Award, the APTA of MA 2021 Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Practice Award and most recently recipient of the IHP’s 2022 Bette Ann Harris distinguished Alumni Award.
